My mission is to bless you. My mission is to help you live life to the full. And my credentials for writing to you? I’ve failed more times than many others. And because I’ve failed so many times
and learned from my failures, I’m successful beyond my wildest dreams. —Bo Sanchez

T HE ministry of Bo Sanchez started in 1978 when his parents, Eugenio Sr. and Pilar, attended their first prayer meeting held by the Upper Room Prayer Group in Project 7, Quezon City.

The Sanchezes attended the prayer meetings regularly, bringing along their children. In one of those meetings, a leader of the Upper Room, looking at the Sanchez’s youngest son Bo, then only 12 years old, prophesied that the boy would be speaking to thousands about God. After 18 months, the Sanchezes decided to organize their own prayer group, named the Light of Jesus, and held their first prayer meeting at the garage of their home at 56 Chicago Street, Cubao, Quezon City, on September 9, 1980 with Bo’s father leading the meeting.

The following week, the second day of the prayer meeting, Bo, then 14 years old, led the prayer meeting for the first time. The following year, 30 regular attendees of the prayer meetings formed the Core Family of what is now known as the Light of Jesus Community which now counts some 3,000 committed members and hundreds more around the world.

Now 46 years old, Bo Sanchez is the author of 27 bestselling books and publisher of seven magazines published by Shepherd’s Voice Publications Inc, which he founded. Bo also established the Shepherd’s Voice Radio and Television Foudation which produces his weekly television show, Kerygma TV, on RPN 9 Sundays, 6 am and at ANC Sundays, 7 am; his daily Radio program on Radio Veritas from Monday to Saturday at 5 am and Sundays at 8 am; and posts his daily Internet reality show on www.preacherinbluejeans.com.

Bo is also an international speaker, travelling extensively around the world. So far, he has spoken in 14 countries, including 38 cities in North America.

He founded the Feast, a weekly prayer gathering with Holy Mass, lively worship, and powerful talks on practical Christian living held at the Philippine International Convention Center every Sunday. It has over 30 branches throughout the country, and 27 more in different parts of the world.

Bo’s Mercy Missions serves the poorest of the poor, from “womb to tomb.” He has initiated partnerships with Grace To Be Born, a shelter for women in crisis and their babies; Tahanan ng Pagmamahal, an orphanage; He Cares, a home for street children; Pag-asa ng Pamilya, a scholarship program for out-of-school youth. He has also partnered with Gawad Kalinga.

He founded Anawim, which takes care of abandoned elderly, providing them daily sustenance, spiritual care, medical care, and when they die, burial services.

He also founded the Light of Jesus Counselling Center which provides one-on-one as well as 24-hour telephone counselling to the downtrodden.

Bo was named one of The Outstanding Young Men or TOYM for 2006. In 2007, he received the Serviam Award given by the Catholic Mass Media Awards. This is the highest award given to a lay for outstanding service to God.

He also formed the Kerygma Family—a borderless, international, non-physical community. All over the world, people are signing up as members of this virtual community—where they receive daily teachings for their spiritual and personal growth.

In another endeavor he’s very passionate about, Bo started the Catholic Filipino Academy to help parents who want to teach their children at home.

Privately, Bo is also a micro-entrepreneur. He engages in small businesses and real estate not only for his family’s needs and for his various projects, but also from his firm belief that one of the most important solutions to the country’s economic problems is to raise up more micro-entrepreneurs. He frequently teaches and writes about financial literacy, believing that our poverty is hugely a product of people’s low financial I.Q. on subjects such as debt-management, saving, investing, and business.

But above all these, Bo believes that his first call is to be a loving husband to his wife Marowe and a devoted father to his sons Benedict and Francis.

In an exclusive interview with The Manila Times, Bo answers questions about his latest advocacy on financial literacy for Filipinos.

The Manila Times (TMT): Bo, you are a Catholic lay preacher, talking about religious matters. What is this financial literacy you are now advocating?

Bo Sanchez (BS): My advocacy on financial literacy is inspired by Deuteronomy 28:12: The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.

Clearly, God is saying we will work and He will bless the work of our hands. God doesn’t want us to borrow. As I say in my talks, the Bible says, the borrower is the slave of the lender.

Instead of borrowing, God wants us to lend. My other word for lender is investor. So my advocacy is to teach our people how to be good investors of the blessings God is giving them.

TMT: But why talk about money? Don’t preachers tell us money is the root of all evil?

BS: The Biblical passage says not money. The accurate phrase is the love of money. That means being materialistic is the root of all evil. I am not preaching about materialism.

So why do we talk about money? Again, as I say in my talks, because we want every area of our life—even our finances—to be placed under the Lordship of Jesus. We don’t want money to be our master. We want to be the master of our money—and turn it over to God’s purpose.

There are some Christians who don’t want to talk about money, so they run away from it. But when they do, their master becomes the lack of money.

That’s not want we want to do. We want to learn how money works so that we can use more of it to serve God.

TMT: How do you combine money and ministry?

BS: Let me tell you a special ministry that’s very close to my heart—because we started it some years ago: Anawim. I got the name from the Hebrew word anawim which means God’s poor— is our home for the abandoned elderly—poor, old people we pick up from the streets.

Throughout the years, hundreds of old people have been housed and fed and loved in our special home. After a few years of staying with us, they go home to God. Anawim is like a special departure airport to Heaven. Without Anawim, they would be dying on the streets.
But here’s a surprising fact: They weren’t always poor.

At one point in their life, all of them were earning good money. If you talk to them, you discover that some lolas and lolos were professionals— government employees, teachers, one was the principal of a school, another, a dentist. Some were maids and laundry women—but they sent money each month to their nephews and nieces back home— who abandoned them in their old age!

So one day, without food, clothes and shelter, they wandered on the streets where we picked
them up.

I don’t want that to happen to people I am preaching to. So I am teaching them how to earn income and build their wealth—just as how I learned the techniques.

TMT: Preachers tell us God will provide. Hasn’t God provided for you, especially because you work for Him?

BS: Oh, yes, I’ve been very blessed. But again, look at Deuteronomy. It says God will bless the work of our hands. We cannot just sit down and wait for God’s provisions. We must work and God will bless our work.

I must admit that early in my Ministry, I thought I was going to be poor—you know, just have one shirt and a pair of pants, a pair of old sandals, never take a bath, don’t use soap, shampoo, or deodorant.

When I prayed over people, they fell flat on the ground, and I thought the Holy Spirit had engulfed them. Then I realized, they fainted because of my smell!

Okay, I am exaggerating.

Seriously now, let me tell you of an incident that triggered my financial advocacy. One time, after one of my talks, a woman approached me, asking for money which she needed to buy medicine. My heart went out to her but I had no money to give to her.

Many other persons had come to the Light of Jesus Family asking for financial help, and we had nothing to give them because LOJ itself needed financial help!

So there I was, the leader of the Family, and I couldn’t bear getting the little that we got from the love offerings for my own sustenance, especially so when I got married and began to have children.

I did not want LOJ to take care of me and my family. I wanted to take care of LOJ.

So I consulted financial experts to learn how to earn money and make it grow. And I’ve been blessed to find people who think the way I do: that we should make use of money—for our daily sustenance, yes—and then we should have extra so we can do God’s work.

I’ve coined a phrase for it: Truly Rich. It’s not bad to be rich if you are truly rich—for God and His people.

TMT: How successful have you been in your advocacy?

BS: Now, I am financially stable, but my family and I live a simple life, so we can use our wealth for our Ministry.

There are a number of persons who have done the same. My maids invest in the stock market and now have savings. A number of LOJ members and attendees of our Feasts have become entrepreneurs and are investing their profits to grow their wealth—and they tithe, contributing to LOJ so we can sustain our Ministry.

My dream is for every Filipino to become an entrepreneur so that we will all be truly rich and God’s dream in Deuteronomy will be fulfilled for the Philippines—“You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.”

TMT: What about your prayer community? Is it stable now?

BS: We’re doing okay. We have over 30 branches of the Feast, our weekly prayer gathering. And we can afford now to support homes for the poor.

But as I said in my recent talks, my dream is to have a billion pesos to give as a trust fund for the Light of Jesus. That trust fund will outlast me. It will be there even after I die. The trust fund, the principal amount won’t be touched—just the interest. But the interest alone, at a mere 4 percent a year (invested in treasury bills) will give the Light of Jesus Family P40 million a year—and every year thereafter—if the trust fund reaches one billion.
I believe that dream will come true.

The Secret of Retiring Rich: "Money Cost Averaging" by Bo Sanchez

The Secret of Retiring Rich: "Money Cost Averaging

(Article from Bo Sanchez Truly Rich Club)

I just want to give you a little follow-up on how to create your own multi-million Retirement Fund.
Let me tell you a story.
Last week, I talked to my 80+ employees.
            From managers to janitors.
            I loved it.
Because I don’t see them often.
You see, I’m a lazy boss. More importantly, I also have a fantastic team of leaders in the office.  So I get out of their way as much as I can.
Obviously, my staff was wondering why I was meeting them.
I took the microphone and announced, “I’m here to make sure that when you retire, you retire as multi-millionaires.”
You should have seen their faces.   Some were probably thinking if someone spiked my breakfast withshabu.
For the whole morning, I taught them how to invest in the Stock Market.
            Janitors. Messengers. Clerks. Managers. Everyone.

I also was able to answer their questions.
I’m sharing some of my answers to you below.
Because they might be your questions too.
Now for those great questions they gave me…
Question: “My father lost money in the Stocks. How can I be sure I won’t lose my money too?”
Bo: Your father is normal. Statistics say that 85% of people lose their money in the Stock Market. Because they were trading. Most likely, your father was trading. But today, I’m not talking about trading the Stock Market. Trading means buying and selling stocks constantly, trying to “time” the market. That should be left to experts. I’m talking about long-term investing. Ten or twenty years. This is the right away of investing, and I’ll teach you how to do that.
Question: “Will my Stocks grow at 20% every year?”
Bo: No, it won’t.  For example: One year, your investments will fall by 20%.   The following year, it will rise by 30%. The next year, it falls by 10%. And so on. It’ll be a roller-coaster ride. But if you put tiny amounts of money every month over a ten or twenty year period, the average growth will most likely be 20% per year IF—and that’s a big IF—you follow the simple money-cost-averaging strategy I’ll teach you.
Question: “Is that realistic? 20% average growth?”
Bo: Stock Market Analysts didn’t pull this figure out of thin air. They base this projected growth on past history. They backtracked 20 years ago. This is what they found out: If a person invested small amounts of money every month in top-notch, solid, great companies, the average yearly growth was 20%. That’s the power of money-cost-averaging.
Question: “What is money-cost-averaging again?”
Bo: Investing small amounts of money each month over a period of ten to twenty years.   Only in great companies.  Money-cost-averaging is the secret of the wealthy.
Question: “You tell me to invest in great companies. But I’m not an expert. I don’t know if a company is great or not.”
Bo: I’ll tell you what these great companies are.  In fact, I already wrote a list of these companies in my Ebook, My Maid Invests In The Stock Market… And Why You Should Too!  Stock Market Analysts study all the companies in the Stock Market. That’s all they do the whole day. I simply pass this information to you.
Question: “But don’t great companies also go bankrupt?”
Bo: Some of them do. But that’s why analysts watch these companies like a hawk.   If you’re a member of my TrulyRichClub, I’ll send you my monthly Stocks Update. Through my newsletter, I’ll warn you if you need to stop investing in a particular company, sell your shares there, and invest in another company.
A Company Of Multi-Millionaires
After my talk, it was pretty noisy.
Everyone was talking, asking questions, and filling out application forms.
My 80+ employees were filling out theirCitiseconline application forms, asking help from one another.  (Note: Citiseconline is our preferred online broker. They’re the best. They also have a “missionary” goal of helping “smaller” people learn to invest.)
I also instructed Weng, my Chief Accountant, to offer the entire staff “automatic salary deduction” each month—so they won’t forget.   This is voluntary of course. But many took the offer.
I thank God I’m the boss. I can do things like this.
I told them, “When you retire from this company, you’ll get the usual retirement pay employees get. But don’t depend on it. Because it’s very small. It won’t last. But if you invest the way I’m telling you to invest, you’re creating your very own Retirement Fund. Even if you just invest P2500 a month, you may end up having P5M in 20 years.”
That day, my 80+ employees went back to their work happy. Very happy.
Because they’re taking charge of their financial future.
Now here’s my question: Are you?
            I pray so.
            May your dreams come true,
            Bo Sanchez

Make 2013 Your Financial Breakthrough Year

Make 2013 Your Financial Breakthrough Year
       By Bo Sanchez

I’m a successful writer.

My mother says so, and I’ve learned (the hard way) that you can’t argue with my mother. Or you experience grave consequences.

What are the most important skills of my success as a writer?

Two essential skills:
1.     My Writing Skills
2.     My Relationship Skills

If I only had Writing Skills but no Relationship Skills, my success would be isolated to writing. Or it would be a short-lived success.

I didn’t ask a publisher to publish my books, but even if I did—I still would have needed relationship skills. Why? A big publisher receives thousands of manuscripts from would-be authors every year. How will they pick 50 books to publish from that mountain of books? Answer: Relationship.

Unless of course you’ve got exceptional writing skills. Perhaps the publisher will notice the needle in the haystack. But if all the manuscripts look the same, the publisher will do business with someone he knows. That’s the rule of sales: The customer will buy from a friend rather than from a stranger.

How do you move from “stranger status” to “friend status”?

Remember that as a writer, you’re not just a writer.
You’re also a salesman.
Everyone is. And salesmen don’t sell stuff. They sell themselves first.

As a writer, I took the more difficult route of building a publishing company.
And making that company publish my books.

That meant working with an enormous number of people. We had to hire staff (50+ now), set-up distribution channels, buy vehicles, etc. Being a non-profit organization, we don’t have much profit to show. We do sell P75M worth of books and magazines each year, but with almost zero net profits because we give it all away.   Our real profit is the changed lives of our readers.   Again—it was relationship skills that made it all work. Great relationships with staff. Great relationships with suppliers. And great relationships with customers.

But for writers today, the world has changed.

Through the internet, you don’t need a publisher anymore.

You can be a one-man publisher. You can write a blog, make it popular, and build a relationship with your audience. You can give away your first Ebook for free. If it’s any good, it will spread virally. People will get to know you, email you, flag you, ping you, forward you, etcetera. And when you feel that your relationship with your readers is strong, you can start selling them an Ebook or a printed book. (How? Print it yourself or work with print-on-demand publishers).

Did you notice? It’s relationship skills again—even if it’s all digital.

My Wealthiest Mentors Are Powerful Relationship Builders
My Mentor—who’s a Billionaire—has the most incredible relationships skills I’ve ever seen. His days are filled with lunches with the key people in his businesses: (1) partners, (2) employees, (3) suppliers, (4) regulators, and (5) customers.

Oh, he has lunches with me too. I don’t fall in any of those 5 categories, but that’s just the kind of guy he is. Whenever I ask him if he’s free for lunch, his standard answer is, “I’m always free. I’m not doing anything.” Haha.

He told me a fascinating story. Whenever he sees one of his customers in a restaurant, he’ll secretly pay for their bill. (He sells office furniture, so these “customers” were the guys in the purchasing department of various companies.) That was his way of thanking them for doing business with him.

One day, he saw a guy who did business with him years ago. He paid for his bill. It was P2T. The guy “caught” him in the act and they started talking. He also mentioned that he had transferred to another company.

Two weeks later, this guy called up my Mentor. His new company needed office furniture. My Mentor sold them P150M worth of stuff! Not bad for a P2T investment, right?

Of course, my Mentor has the reputation of being the best in his industry. His products are top-of-the-line but their after-sales service is even better.

His character—plus the ability to connect—made him a billionaire.
It’s your turn.

Many of you aren’t increasing your wealth because you’re not increasing your relationship skills. Increase your wealth by increasing your ability to build relationships.

God Believes You Can Prosper by Bo Sanchez

God Believes You Can Prosper - Article from Bo Sanchez' Truly Rich Club

Have you failed in life?

I’ve met a lot of people who’ve made big messes in their life, they now think they can’t prosper anymore.
Before you chisel that belief on stone, I’d like you first to read a friend of mine share his amazing story with you.

As a kid, he was never a good student. He had failing grades all his life. He was even kicked out of college. And so he never held a college degree.

But something remarkable happened in his life. Today, my friend owns companies worth billions.

How could that have happened?

I’ll let him tell you his story…

The Power Of Unconditional Love

My name is Edward Lee.

I didn’t start life with millions in my pocket.
That is why I believe anyone can do it.
That is why I believe you can do it.

When people see me for the first time and learn that I own a few companies, people assume that I was born in a wealthy Chinese family.

That’s not true.
I come from a very simple family.

My mother was a school teacher and my father was a door-to-door salesman.

And not only did I not come from a rich family, I also was never able to finish college. Because ever since my Elementary days, I kept failing school. I was a really bad student. I skipped my classes and slept.

In Grade School, I was this stout boy who always slept at the back of the classroom. Because my mother was a teacher in that same school, she would silently enter the classroom and wake me up. She’d pull me out of the classroom, change my shirt (being stout, I’d sweat a lot), and tell me to return to class. And yes, I’d return to the classroom to sleep again.

That was why I kept on failing.
The only reason why I never repeated a year was because my teachers let me pass—for the sake of my mother, their co-teacher.

All those years, my mother and father would cry buckets of tears in front of me, saying, “Edward, we know you’re not dumb. We know you’re intelligent. We believe in you.”

Not once did I hear them tell me (whenever I brought a failing report card), “You’re stupid! You’re hopeless!” I never received condemnation. Instead, all I saw were their tears and their unconditional love.

Through all those years, they never gave up on me.
Time and time again, year in and year out, I’d fail in school, but Mom and Dad kept encouraging me—and loving me.

And they would spend time with me everyday. Each morning, my father would talk to me over breakfast. There were days when we’d talk for hours.

One of the favorite topics he loved talking about were stories about the Taipans—the very rich Chinese Filipinos.  How they started from nothing. And how they created their wealth over time. Through these stories, he was telling me, “One day, you can become rich, son. I don’t care if others don’t believe you. I don’t care if your teachers don’t believe you. I don’t care if your grades are bad. I believe you.”

So if you ask me, “What made you the success that you are today?” I’d say, “I am who I am today because of the unconditional love of my parents.”

Parents, if you have a problematic child, don’t lose hope.
Love them unconditionally. Spend time with them each day. And don’t give up on them, no matter how they’re failing you. Keep believing that they’ll be a great success. If you love them unconditionally, you’ll be laying down a foundation of success for their lives.

Because at the end of the day, there really are no bad children. Only bad parents.

God Believes In You

Edward’s mother and father didn’t forget their son, no matter how much he messed up his life. It was that unconditional love that changed him.
I love Edward’s story. His parents were able to give God’s unconditional love to their son. No matter what he did, they just loved him. Because behind the mess, they saw magnificence that no one else saw. And they never stopped believing.

Friend, God’s Love will change you too. Because God will love you forever. In the Bible, God says, I have loved you with an everlasting love.
Perhaps right now, all you can see is the mess.

Perhaps you’re telling me, “Bo, that’s not true. I’ve messed up my life. I’ve made some very poor decisions. I’m a failure, Bo.”

Here’s the truth.

God believes you’re a great person.

There’s greatness in you. God sees it in you because He put that greatness there. And even if you messed up, listen carefully: No matter how big a mess you make, you can’t lessen God’s love for you. You cannot decrease it. You cannot subtract it. You cannot reduce it. Yes, you can prevent God’s Love to enter your life by sin, but you can’t turn it off.

Let me say it in another way. No amount of sin, no amount of disobedience, no amount of mess in your life can lessen God’s belief in you.

Yes, when you sin, you stop God’s love from flowing into your life. But your sin can’t stop God from loving you.

God Is Happy When You Prosper

Do you think the parents of Edward were happy when he became successful?
       Absolutely.

In the same way, God is overjoyed when you prosper. The Bible says, The Lord be magnified, who delights in the prosperity of His servant. (Psalms 35:27)

Let me speak abundance into your life:

This year, I pray that God will bless the work of your hands.

This year, God will bless your career. If you have a job, your boss will recognize you. This year, you’ll get a salary increase. This year, you’ll be promoted.

If your boss won’t recognize your excellence, I pray that new doors will open for you—and someone else will recognize you.

If you have a business, I pray that your marketing will be so fantastic, you’ll have the happy problem of having too many customers.

This year, I pray that God will multiply your investments.

So that this year, you can give even more to the Lord’s work.

       May your dreams come true,
       Bo Sanchez
